Types of Damp Explained:

• Penetrating Damp

Penetrating damp is when water enters a building from the outside through cracks, damaged brickwork, faulty roof/guttering, or other external defects, traveling horizontally into the structure, causing dark patches, mould, and plaster damage, typically appearing after rain and at any height, unlike rising damp. It's caused by issues like cracked pointing, broken roof tiles, blocked drains, or bad window seals, allowing rain to seep through porous building materials

• Rising Damp

Rising damp is when groundwater travels up through the lower parts of a building's walls from the ground, usually due to a failed or missing damp-proof course (DPC), using capillary action to soak into porous materials like brick and mortar, causing damp patches, peeling paint, and salt deposits (efflorescence) on walls, typically rising up to about a meter high. It's common in older properties and can damage structures if left untreated.

 • Condensation Damp

Condensation damp happens when warm, moisture-filled indoor air hits cold surfaces (windows, walls, ceilings), turning the water vapor into liquid droplets, causing dampness and often black mold, especially in corners or areas with poor airflow like behind furniture. It's the most common damp problem, stemming from everyday activities like showering, cooking, and even breathing, creating excess moisture that can't escape, particularly in modern, well-insulated but poorly ventilated homes.
